New third league to start 2008/09

The extraordinary Bundestag of the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt/Main has decided to introduce a single third league with start of the 2008/09 season. The league is going to comprehend 20 teams. The Regionalliga, formerly formed of two divisions, will in turn be the fourth league and divided into three divisions with 18 clubs each.

Qualification for the new third league will take place during the 2007/08 season. The first ten teams of each division of the Regionalliga will get a berth in the new league, four of these teams promoting to the Second Bundesliga and being replaced by the four relegated teams of the Second Bundesliga.

A maximum of four reserve teams of clubs of the Bundesliga and Second Bundesliga will be allowed to compete in the third league.
