New faces in Kuntz’ 23-man squad

The Germany U21’s have already achieved their first objective in qualifying for the European Championship with a perfect record. With their ten wins from ten games, Stefan Kuntz’ side have the best coefficient ranking of all of the teams who’ll be at the Euros and will therefore have an extremely good seeding for the group stage draw. The upcoming games against Turkey (10th November, 18:00 CET) and Poland (15th November, 18:30 CET) will serve as important tests, looking ahead to the European Championships in the Summer.

Stefan Kuntz on his 23-man squad: “The matches in November are a good chance to get to know new players and try out a few things. We want to make clear that the door to the U21’s Euros is still open to young, talented players.”

Zetterer, Guwara, Seguin and Köpke to make debuts

Michael Zetterer (SV Werder Bremen), Leon Guwara (SV Darmstadt 98), Paul Seguin (VfL Wolfsburg) and Pascal Köpke (Erzgebirge Aue) have all been called up to the squad for the first time but have all represented Germany before at lower levels. Serge Gnabry, Jonathan Tah, Benjamin Henrichs, Yannick Gerhardt and Leon Goretzka, who were all recently chosen for the U21s, have this time been selected by first team coach Joachim Löw for his team’s upcoming encounter with San Marino and Italy.

“I’m very happy that Joachim Löw has rewarded players who’ve recently featured for the U21s with a call-up,” said DFB sporting director Hansi Flick. “It shows once again how very important of a foundation the U21s side is. In the coming months, there’ll again be more rotation so that the two teams work with varied squads and can choose different options for any tournament.”
