Neuer: "I’ve never experienced anything like that before"

Die Mannschaft ended their poor run of form against Italy in competitive internationals last night, whilst also managing to reach the last four of this summer’s European Championship. The game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes but Joachim Löw’s men won the subsequent shootout. After the final whistle DFB.de caught up with the protagonists.

Jonas Hector: It’s difficult to put my feelings into words but obviously I’m delighted that the penalty went in. There weren’t many people left to take one – I grabbed my chance and made the most of it. Thankfully we’re in the next round. It was a tough match but luck was on our side.

Head coach Joachim Löw: Obviously I’m happy and when you factor the opposition into it, it feels even sweeter. The tournament isn’t over yet though, there’s still a lot of football to be played. The youngsters were impressive during the shootout and I’ve already congratulated Jonas Hector on grabbing the winner. The Italians were good today and have been throughout the tournament.

Mats Hummels: The walk to the spot is a long one. I was over the moon when I saw that Buffon failed to keep mine out. It’s annoying to have picked up another booking as I’m now banned for the next game.

Manuel Neuer: I’ve never experienced a shootout like that before. It took a while for the game to be resolved. I already had an idea where the two I stopped would be going. I certainly didn’t want to let Bonucci score twice.

Jerome Boateng: I think that we were the better side but it was tough out there. Their penalty was a strange one because I did all I could to move my hands out the way of the ball but even that wasn’t enough. You need luck to win penalties, but having a keeper like Manu helps too. The other goalkeeper also did well though.

Sami Khedira: Today’s performance was worthy of champions. We dominated the game but conceded an unfortunate equaliser. Our tournament isn’t over yet.

General Manager Oliver Bierhoff: I’d like to compliment the lads on how they played for 120 minutes. We played a tough team but remained in control and kept a lid on the game. The players are obviously delighted but know that there is another game. Lifting the title this summer is one of my dreams.

DFB President Reinhard Grindel: I’m proud of the fact that we were the better side for the whole match. Despite the moments of misfortune we pressed on and qualified. I’m pleased for Jonas Hector. He had a great game and also won us the game. We’re delighted to have Manuel Neuer on our side – he’s excellent during shootouts.
