Neuer: "I fully expect to play at the World Cup"

Manuel Neuer has been out injured for several months, but has dismissed any doubts about his participation at the World Cup. "I am fully expecting to be in goal at the tournament. The way I see it, nothing is standing between me and the World Cup," the 31-year-old DFB captain told Bild am Sonntag.

In September, Neuer sustained another metatarsal fracture. He has not specified a date for his expected return to action for Bayern Munich. "If everything goes well and I don’t have any more problems, if I get the all clear from the specialists, then I’ll start to play again. I can’t give an exact date," he emphasised.

"I will certainly be in recovery training by January, but I can’t say what that will mean just yet," said the keeper, before adding: "It would be nice to wave my two companions goodbye over Christmas." By ‘companions’, Manuel Neuer means his crutches. It is important for Neuer not to put himself under any pressure, in his words: "another injury would be less than ideal."

At the moment, Neuer can safely say that "all is well." He has even considered getting himself a T-shirt printed, saying "I’m alright," so that people don’t keep asking him.
