Neuer: First cup game against ex-club Schalke

Six years ago Bayern had to plot their way past Manuel Neuer in the DFB Cup. A few months later, the goalkeeper made the switch from Schalke to Bayern and has since broken numerous records. For the first time in the DFB Cup, the German international is set to play against his former club.

"I don’t come from Gelsenkirchen, but Gelsenkirchen-Buer", explained Manuel Neuer in 2011 in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Buer is right in the centre of Gelsenkirchen. There, where hard work is written in capital letters, is both Neuer’s home town and the home of Schalke 04. Neuer used to spectate matches from the north stand in Buer and cheer on the Royal Blues. A few years later, the once fan stood between the posts and was adored at Schalke until he left for Munich.

Throwback: In summer 2011, the transfer of Neuer from Schalke to Bayern intensified the rivalry between the fans of the two clubs. He had to work hard to impress the Bayern supporters. He did this with some world-class performances, some revolutionary goalkeeping techniques and, above all, trophies. Four league titles, three DFB Cups, the club world cup – Neuer’s trophy cabinet is extensive!

2011: Neuer wins cup semi-final with Schalke against Bayern

The 5-0 final win over MSV in 2011

The hustle and bustle is no issue for the goalkeeper. After Raul gave Schalke the lead, Bayern pushed hard in the search for an equaliser, but the likes of Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller found no way past their now-team mate, then in the Royal Blues‘ goal, who put on an exceptional display to help his team book their place in the final against MSV Duisberg. Schalke strolled to success, earning a 5-0 win over MSV.

The Germany captain moved from Schalke to Bayern after that final, a transfer that has given him a great deal of success. However, Wednesday will be the first time Neuer has encountered his former side in the DFB Cup. On the upcoming game, he said “Schalke will be very up for it and bring a similar level of performance to last time out. We have played Schalke at home recently. We knew before that game that it would be difficult and expect the same this time around in the Cup.”

Bayern hold the advantage across previous fixtures, while Neuer himself has never lost against Schalke. In reaction to the draw, he posted “quarter final against Schalke – another reunion with Holger Badstuber” on his Facebook page. Of course, though, Badstuber will not be the only reunion for Neuer, as he prepares to once again face his boyhood club.
