Neid to attend Women's World Cup draw in Canada

Who are Germany going to face in next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup? A delegation from the DFB including manager Silvia Neid and sporting director Doris Fitschen fly to Canada on Friday to attend the draw ahead of next year’s tournament.

The draw will be made on Saturday (18:00 CET, 12:00 Local Time) in Ottawa’s Museum of History. The list of teams competing in the competition is complete; Ecuador overcame Trinidad and Tobago in a two-legged play-off this week.

Fitschen: "We’re excited to finding out who we will play"

Doris Fitschen said: "We’re looking forward to the draw and are excited to find out who we will be playing in the tournament. We can then finalise details for the friendlies in April and May 2015, as they are an important part of tournament preparation. The draw will also then allow us to research where we are playing and where we want to base ourselves.”

The delegation will also take part in workshops after the draw, which will include discussions on how the tournament will play out. They will also visit the locations of their first two games in order to scrutinise training facilities and potential accommodation.

24 teams in six cities

The seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place between 6th June – 5th July 2015. The tournament will feature 24 teams for the first time. Canada, as hosts, have already been selected as the seeded team in Group A and will consequently play in the tournament’s opening match, which will be played in Edmonton.

Six groups of four teams will be drawn out: The top two teams of each group will qualify for the knock-out stages automatically and will be joined by the four best teams who finish third in their groups. After the group stage the knock-out stages take place: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-placed play-off and, of course, the final. The games will be played in six cities: Edmonton, Montréal, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Moncton and Vancouver.

Switzerland, coached by Voss-Tecklenburg, qualify for the first time

The other Europeans teams to qualify are: England, France, Norway, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, who are coached by Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. The latter three teams will be playing in their first World Cup. Two-time World Champions USA, Mexico and debutants Costa Rica are representing North and Central America.

Cameroon and the Ivory Coast are making their inaugural appearance in the Finals and they are joined by Nigeria. Asia and Oceania are represented by six teams: Reigning World Champions Japan, Australia, China, South Korea, Thailand and New Zealand. Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador represent South America. Thailand and Ecuador are appearing for the first time.
