Neid: "I'm proud of my team"

The dream of a third World Cup title for Germany’s Women has ended in the semi-finals. Silvia Neid’s team lost their duel against the USA 2-0 and will now play the third-place play-off against either defending champions Japan or England on Saturday (22:00 CEST).

The DFB-Team head coach faced the media after the defeat to the Olympic champions and spoke about Celia Sasic, who missed a penalty, the third-place play-off match and moving past the defeat.

Question: Ms. Neid, how do you sum up this result against the USA?

Silvia Neid: It was a great semi-final with two strong teams. It was very even. Unfortunately our problem was that we were not accurate enough and so didn’t pose a big enough goal threat. So kudos and congratulations to the USA.

Question: What do you think of the penalty given against your team?

Neid: The foul was quite clearly outside the box, you can see that on the replays.

Question: Does that annoy you?

Neid: Naturally I’m unhappy that this penalty decided the game. But what can I do? We have to live with the decision, I can’t change it.

Question: How are you going to deal with Celia Sasic now?

Neid: We have to build her up again. She scored two penalties against France; it’s because of her that we made it to the semi-finals. This time she didn’t score, that happens in sport and she will have got over that by Saturday.

Question: How difficult is it to now look forward to the third-place play-off?

Neid: Right now it’s very hard. But we want to end on a high, so in that regard it’s good to have one more game.

Question: How long do you need to move on from such a game?

Neid: We have to move on quickly. Two days and then we want to take that third place – we can travel home with our heads held high, even if we finish fourth. We’ve had a good World Cup; we’ve sent many good teams home. We are once again amongst the best four teams in the world, and when you play a tournament, many factors decide how far you go. I am pleased and proud of my team. They gave everything again and unfortunately it wasn’t enough.
