Neid calls up Doorsoun and Blässe for EURO qualifiers

Silvia Neid has called up 21 players to her squad to face Hungary (18th September) and Croatia (22nd September). Included for the first time is 23-year-old midfielder Sara Doorsoun from SGS Essen. Silvia Neid says, “Sara is an interesting player who has really developed well. Now we want to see how she gets on with us.” Anna Blässe from Wolfsburg is also back in the squad.

Lena Lotzen, Jennifer Cramer and Dzsenifer Marozsan, who were all in the World Cup squad, are not available to Neid because of injury. Saskia Bartusiak is also back in the squad after returning to training with 1. FFC Frankfurt following an injury suffered on the first day of the season. Annike Krahn (Bayer Leverkusen) has also overcome her ankle injury.

Positive record against Hungary and Croatia

Germany’s women have met their Hungarian counterparts on seven occasions, with the most recent meeting taking place 14 years ago. Germany have five wins and a draw to their name and have suffered defeat only once. The record against Croatia is also positive with four wins from four, including a win in World Cup qualifications in 2013. Neid says, “Despite our record against these teams, we are going into these games with concentration and respect. We want to qualify directly for the 2017 EUROs in the Netherlands by finishing first in the group. The requirement is that we play with passion, creativity and commitment. That is our demand in every game.”

Alongside Germany, Hungary and Croatia in Group 5 are Russia and Turkey. The eight group winners and the six best runners-up qualify directly for the finals in 2017. The two remaining runners-up will then contest a two-legged play off in October 2016 for the final place.
