Neid: "A perfect start"

10-0 against Ivory Coast in their World Cup opener – the Germany women’s national team made a perfect start to the tournament in Canada. Head coach Silvia Neid spoke on the one-sided affair in the first match in Group B against the third-placed side in the last African Championship. Germany face Norway next on Thursday evening (22:00 CEST).

Question: Mrs Neid, how happy are you with the 10-0 win for your opening game?

Silvia Neid: I’m very happy. Ten goals scored, three points accrued and now filled with self-confidence – it was a perfect start, you can’t complain about that.

Question: Did you expect Ivory Coast to be a stronger opponent?

Neid: We estimated them a lot better than they played. But that’s also due to the fact we approached the game with lots of concentration. We were aggressive in the challenges from the off. We had the cutting edge with the second goal and it made them tired and wore them down. They didn’t have any more desire after that. I never thought we would have won 10-0.

Question: What will you take from this game into your next tough task against Norway?

Neid: It won’t be as easy at the back against Norway. Their flexible tactically, know all the tricks of the trade and have lots of facets. So we need to enjoy playing football again and be strong with our challenges. I’m expecting an even game.

Question: Melanie Leupolz had to go off early, there were lots of fouls – did any other players pick up knocks?
