National Team: Germany win friendly against Northern Ireland 4-1

The german national team won on Saturday an international friendly in Belfast against host Northern Ireland 4-1 (1-1). Michael Ballack struck twice to lead 10-man Germany to the win.

The 2006 World Cup hosts had defender Robert Huth sent off in the 15th minute for handling a goalbound shot from winger Keith Gillespie. Northern Ireland went ahead when David Healy scored the resulting penalty.

Gerald Asamoah equalised for Germany two minutes later and Ballack struck with a header and a penalty in the second half to settle the issue. Lukas Podolski, celebrating his 20th birthday, made it 4-1 with a left-foot shot nine minutes from time.

Germany have one more friendly against Russia on Wednesday before the Confederations Cup, the only competitive action for coach Juergen Klinsmann's side before the World Cup.

Germany dominated the second half and took the lead when Ballack stole in at the near post to convert Sebastian Deisler's free kick in the 62nd minute. Bastian Schweinsteiger won a controversial penalty four minutes later and Ballack stepped up to score his 24th international goal before Podolski pounced for the fourth. created by ar
