National team call-up for eight newcomers against Poland

National team coach Joachim Löw has called up eight newcomers for the international match against Poland on 13 May, to be shown live on ZDF at 20:45 CET. The squad for next Tuesday’s friendly fixture includes a total of 18 players.

The call-up represents the first involvement in the senior squad for Oliver Sorg and Christian Günter of SC Freiburg, Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka of Schalke 04, Antonio Rüdiger of VFB Stuttgart, Christoph Kramer of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Maximilian Arnold of VfL Wolfsburg and Kevin Volland of 1899 Hoffenheim.

There are four other potential debutants too: Sebastian Jung of Eintracht Frankfurt, Sebastian Rudy of 1899 Hoffenheim, Shkodran Mustafi of Sampdoria and André Hahn of Augsburg have all previously been called up to the senior squad by head coach Joachim Löw, but have yet to win their first cap for their country.

Löw: "The Poland match is a chance to focus on the future"

Joachim Löw made the following statement regarding his squad for the Poland match: "It goes without saying that the team we field in Hamburg is going to be completely different from the team that will compete for the World Cup in Brazil this summer. Of course, this is primarily down to the upcoming German Cup final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich as well as a range of other competitions currently in progress in countries where our national team players still have commitments to their clubs."

The coach continued: "Every international match is extremely important to us. The Poland match is a chance to focus on the future – we want to look ahead, beyond this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Some of the players involved could become pivotal figures for the national team at major tournaments in the future."
