Mustafi tightens grip on fourth place with Valencia

World Cup winner Shkrodran Mustafi and FC Valencia are still on course for the Champions League play offs. The central defender, and six time Spanish champions, beat newly promoted side SD Eibar 3-1 on matchday 35 to tighten their grip on fourth spot. Nicolas Otamendi, Daniel Parejo and Paco Alacaer scored for Valencia, whilst Mikel Arruabarrena scored the consolation goal for the guests. Mustifi played the full 90 minutes once again. Direct qualification is still possible for Valencia after closing the gap behind third-placed reigning champions Atletico Madrid to just four points, with three games to go.

Toni Kroos, meanwhile, and Real Madrid are still strong title contenders in the Spanish Primera Division. Real won 3-2 against Europa League semi finalists FC Sevilla to keep on FC Barcelona’s heels at the top of the league. Cristiano Ronaldo scored all three goals for Madrid, while World Champion Kroos played the full 90 minutes.

Real (85 points) are close behind FC Barcelona (87) with three games to go. The Catalan club, meanwhile, won 8-0 against bottom side FC Cordoba and go into Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal with Bayern München in great form. Luiz Suárez scored a hat-trick, whilst ex-Schalke Ivan Rakitic, Gerard Piqué, Neymar and Lionel Messi (2) added the rest for Barca.

Wins for Can and Huth in England

U21 international Emre Can and Liverpool sealed an important win in the Premier League in the battle for the Champions League, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1. Can played the whole game.

Captain Steven Gerrard scored an 87th minute winner shortly after missing a penalty, whilst Nedum Onuoha was sent off with ten to go for the guests. Liverpool took the lead through Coutinho before Leroy Fer found the equaliser mid way through the second half. Liverpool remain fifth in the Premier League.

Robert Huth and Leicester City are edging ever closer to safety. The former Germany international was involved in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, which temporarily put Leicester four points clear of the relegation zone.

The Foxes have won five of their last six games. Leonardo Ulloa (1’, 48’ pen) and Wes Morgan (17’) were the goal scorers at the King Power Stadium. Newcastle’s Mark Williamson (62’) and Daryl Janmaat (90’) were both sent off after being shown two yellow cards.

Newcastle, who began the season with Europa League ambitions, have been sucked into the relegation battle after losing their last eight games in a row.

Lazio slip up without Klose, Fiorentina win without Gomez

Italian first division side Lazio, who were without suspended World Champion Miroslav Klose, have seen local rivals AS Roma overtake them into the Champions League places. Lazio were only able to draw 1-1 with Atalanta on matchday 34 in Serie A and were replaced in second place by Roma, who won 2-0 against FC Genoa.

Just like Klose, Mario Gomez was unable to play at the weekend due to suspension. His AC Fiorentina side won 3-1 against AC Cesena and moved up into fifth, which would mean Europa League qualification come the end of the season. Josip Illicic (32’ and 36’) and Alberto Gilardino (57’) scored the goals for Fiorentina. After going behind through a goal from Giuseppe Biava (50’), Marco Parolo (78’) secured a point for Lazio. World Champion Lukas Podolski was brought on in the 53rd minute of Inter Milan’s 0-0 draw with Chievo Verona and remain three points behind Fiorentina in eighth.
