Mustafi and Valencia beat Real and birthday boy Kroos

Real Madrid’s winning run across all competitions has come to an end after 22 matches. The Spanish record champions, whose squad featured World Champions Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira, were beaten 2-1 by fourth-placed side Valencia. Real stay top of the table though, as FC Barcelona – without Marc Andre ter Stegen – lost 1-0 against Real Sociedad.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the favourites in front from the penalty spot, but the hosts and World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi fought back and secured three points thanks to goals from Antonio Barragan and Nicolas Hernan Otamendi. Even with the help of birthday boy Toni Kroos, who turned 25 years old, Madrid were unable to find an equaliser. The introduction of Sami Khedira also couldn’t prevent the defending Champions League winners from suffering their third defeat of the season.

Schürrle wins with Chelsea - Mertesacker scores for Arsenal

Chelsea also picked up a win on Sunday, beating Watford 3-0 in the FA Cup third round. André Schürrle was in the starting line-up, but the Blues didn’t get going until his withdrawal for Diego Costa at half time. Willian, Loïc Rémy and Kurt Zouma scored the goals for the West London club.

Arsenal also progressed to the last 32. In a repeat of last season’s final, World Champion Per Mertesacker grabbed the opener in a 2-0 win against Hull City from a header. Alexis Sanchez confirmed the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute.
