Müller: "You realise, what the hard work was for"

Record champions FC Bayern München secured their fourth straight domestic title on Saturday. A 2-1 win in Ingolstadt thanks to Robert Lewandowski's double was enough to ensure the title was once again heading to Munich. Obviously the players and staff members were full of joy after the game and DFB.de caught up with Thomas Müller to get his immediate reaction to the triumph.

Question: Thomas Müller, your red championship T-shirts read "4Ever". How does the fourth straight title feel?

Thomas Müller: It feels great. The fact that it's the fourth in a row is just a side-note. It's really about having won the championship in a close game. Our plan was to produce a good performance today, because we didn't want to be under pressure on the final matchday. That's why it was like a small final for us. We knew that if we win, we would win the title and correspondingly we celebrated quite a lot after the final whistle. It's that point when you realise, what all the hard work was for. It's simply hugely gratifying when something you worked hard for pays off.

Question: Is this historic achievement something special for you?

Müller: In the aftermath yes, but from an emotional point of view it doesn't matter. It's about having won this truly tough championship this year. Nothing was gifted to us and Dortmund put up more than just a fight. They were quite uncomfortable opponents for long spells this season.

Question: Was this the most difficult of the four championships?

Müller: Yes, I think so. It was the closest. We faced pressure for a longer period of time. Dortmund have played well in second half of the season. With the exception of today's game in Frankfurt, they didn't lose a single match.

Question: Were you ever worried throughout the season that the championship would not end up in your hands?

Müller: Worried is not the right word. It was realistic that we would win, since we always had a good cushion at the top. Dortmund were - as I like to describe it - very annoying. I don't even think that Dortmund was aware of just how annoying they were for us. That's why we can be proud. We had to invest a lot this year and now we can reap the rewards.

Question: Is winning this title a small consolation for Tuesday's Champions League exit?

Müller: It obviously feels good, but football is a fast moving business. We had a very unfortunate night on Tuesday, but there is nothing to be ashamed for. In hindsight it's easier to accept the elimination if you've produced the type of performance that we had planned to and brought to the pitch. Due to various reasons it just wasn't meant to be. It would've been more agonising, if we had been eliminated after producing a poor performance.
