Müller: "We need to keep our feet on the ground"

Following a scrappy start to the second half of the season with just one win from three games (2-0 against Stuttgart, otherwise a 1-1 draw against Schalke and a 4-1 defeat in Wolfsburg), FC Bayern München roared back to life in impressive style on Saturday afternoon. On their way to another league title, the record holders annihilated Hamburger SV 8-0. World Cup winner Thomas Müller played a big part in Bayern's goal frenzy. The attacking midfielder bagged a brace and provided three assists.

The Germany international was asked for his views on the trouncing of HSV and of FCB’s upcoming UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg in Ukraine.

Question: Mr. Müller, what is your verdict on the 8-0 victory over HSV following what was a rather scrappy start to the second half of the season?

Thomas Müller: It depends what exactly you include when trying to summarise our start. We obviously put in a good performance in this game, we all know that. But with a result like this we need to make sure that we don't get ahead of ourselves.

Question: That means?

Müller: We will now direct our attention towards Tuesday [against Shakhtar Donetsk]. We are clearly all delighted with our performance, but an 8-0 win is always difficult interpret correctly.

Question: What do you mean exactly by making sure you don't get ahead of yourselves?

Müller: Well, we didn't play brilliantly in our opening three games and now we’ve won 8-0. We were scrutinised a little following those first games and now I don't want people to overreact at the other end of the scale. Things like that happen way too quickly sometimes. We need to keep our feet on the ground.

Question: Was that the FC Bayern that everyone expects and wants to see?

Müller: The way we played was great. Obviously we won't always be able to win by such a big margin. First of all, our shots won't always find the net and secondly, our opponents in the Champions League will never let their guard down no matter how many goals you score, because the away-goal rule plays such an important part. We expect a totally different game in Ukraine.

Question: What do you think about Wolfsburg's 5-4 victory in Leverkusen?

Müller: We obviously watched the highlights. Wolfsburg are our closest pursuers and it's always nice when they drop a point here or there, but that's football.

Question: Are the goals now going to flow again for Thomas Müller?

Müller: (laughs) I at least managed to find the back of the net again for now.
