Müller: "We just didn't give Wolfsburg any breathing space"

The record holders eliminated the cup holders last night: Two goals from World Cup winner Thomas Müller helped Bayern München to their 3-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg and into the last 16 of the DFB Cup. The 26-year-old spoke to DFB.de about Bayern’s terrific form, the outstanding first 45 minutes and the coming fixtures.

Question: Mr. Müller, everything seemed to go according to plan against Wolfsburg didn’t it?

Thomas Müller:We had imagined we would play the way we did. But you can’t always be certain that it will pan out the way we imagine.

Question: Watching on, it looked like you had prepared to win big.

Müller: In the first half especially, we were quite simply flawless. We moved the ball forward quickly, kept our positions well and also worked hard off the ball. We just didn’t give Wolfsburg any breathing space at all. Going 3-0 up was the reward. We were superb, that’s what we all want to see.

Question: Was it the best first 45 minutes to a game you’ve had all season?

Müller: I’m always careful not to use the superlative. It was very good, and even if it was the best, that doesn’t help us in any way.

Question: What was different this time from the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal, in a game where your team was also in the ascendancy?

Müller: You can never compare two games of football with each other. What was different today? Every game has different incidents, the fifty-fifty challenges, the tackles - everything is different. It’s not like you can copy the way you play: Every situation is always slightly different.

Question: What was better than last week then?

Müller: Football is not like playing against a computer - the opposition is playing as well. And as I said before: You never get the same spaces in any given position. There are 22 men playing football, not just eleven. Obviously we could have won last week as well, but I can’t compare the two games.

Question: Is there any beating FC Bayern in this form?

Müller: If we keep playing like we did in the first half then no. But football is no fairytale.
