Müller: "The key is to remain patient and determined"

Müller: I'm aware of that and I'm pleased about it, but I also know that the past has no bearing on my next game. As an attacker you're always trying to get yourself into good positions and make good decisions. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes it doesn't go as well. At the moment things are going in my favour.

Question: Germany are leading the group with a four-point buffer over third place with two games to go. You must surely think that qualification is a formality now.

Müller: We still want to win both of our next matches, and we go into these games full of confidence. The game against Ireland will be similar to Scotland – Poland, Scotland and Ireland are all strong, competitive sides who place a large emphasis on defending.

Scotland got Müllered twice in Glasgow, and he played a role in the third goal too. The 3-2 win in the European Championship qualifier against Scotland had Müller written all over it, and after the match, he spoke to us about his impressions of the game.

Question: Mr Müller, the team recorded a 3-2 win in Scotland. How happy are you with the game?

Thomas Müller: We took control of the game from the very first whistle. We let the ball do the work and we were very confident in our game. Because the Scotland team were so well organised in defence, we couldn't create gilt-edged chances straight away, but we remained calm.

Question: And you were rewarded for that, too.

Müller: We linked up well to create the chances for both of our goals in the first half, but we had a bit of luck finishing them. Scotland didn't really do much in the game but they're still a strong side so they managed to bring it back to 2-2. I don't think we did anything particularly wrong; they just had some luck on their side. We stuck at our job and didn't get frustrated. We had to run a fair bit more but we kept the ball well. We deserved to win and we put in a great performance in front of a great crowd. The scoreline didn't really do us justice.

Question: How hard was it to carve out chances against Scotland when they were set up like that?

Müller: We did a good job. We were better on the ball than in the Poland game. We were assured, we made good decisions, we stayed calm and we had a certain incisiveness going forward. The key is to remain patient and determined. The game was fairly tight but we found what little space there was by moving around very well. If someone took the ball out to the wing, they would take a central defender with them, and that creates space for their teammates. That's what patience is all about – tiring our your opponents with your passing.

Question: You've scored six goals on your last four competitive internationals, so it's fair to say things could be going worse for you right now.

Müller: I'm aware of that and I'm pleased about it, but I also know that the past has no bearing on my next game. As an attacker you're always trying to get yourself into good positions and make good decisions. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes it doesn't go as well.
