Müller scores late on to secure Bayern home win

Thomas Müller’s penalty in the closing stages of the match put Bayern 2-1 up against Augsburg. Dortmund stayed top of the league on the fourth matchday as they defeated Hannover 96 4-2. Both Bayern and Dortmund have maximum points after the first four league games. Vfl Wolfsburg had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Ingolstadt. Hertha Berlin temporarily climb to fifth in the table, after beating Stuttgart 2-1, and Darmstadt remain undefeated this season as they won 1-0 against Leverkusen.

Former Germany youth team player Alexander Esswein scored a half-volley in the 43rd minute. It was a great start for Augsburg, who were dreaming of beating Bayern twice in a row at the Allianz Arena. The last fixture was at the end of last season when Raul Bobadilla scored to get a win of their local rivals. Robert Lewandowski revived the hopes of the league champions in the 77th minute. In the dying moments, Bayern were then awarded a penalty, which Müller converted to give the team from Munich the victory.

In Hannover, the hosts took the lead with the first real attack in the 18th minute through Artur Sobiech. Dortmund pulled one back before the break. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot in the 35th minute, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan put them in front in the 44th minute. Sobiech bagged his second in the 53rd minute, but his teammate Felipe gave the guests the advantage with a 67th minute own goal. Aubameyang wrapped up the 4-2 win with five minutes left to play.

Darmstadt caused the day’s big upset, beating Leverkusen at the BayArena to continue their unbeaten run, having drawn their opening three games. Captain Aytac Sulu headed in the match-winning goal in the eight minute for the Lilywhites.

It wasn’t quite the dream debut for Julian Draxler, as Wolfsburg dropped points against newly-promoted side Ingolstadt. Draxler had the best chance for the Wolfs, but Ramazan Özcan kept out his effort with a stunning save.

Hertha celebrated their first win of the season thanks to Genki Haraguchi and Fabian Lustenberger, who scored the decisive goal late injury time in the first half. Toni Sunjic had equalised for Stuttgart, but in the end they went home empty handed.
