Müller on his second goal: “I meant to score like that”

World Champion Thomas Müller scored twice in FC Bayern’s comeback against SV Darmstadt on matchday 22, and one of his goals was a real peach. In an interview with DFB.de the Germany forward talked about his world-class second goal, the upcoming Champions League encounter with Juventus and Bayern’s situation in the centre of defence.

Question: Mr. Müller, your second goal against Darmstadt was a truly spectacular overhead kick which completed FC Bayern’s comeback.

Thomas Müller: Everything that happens on the football pitch involves a certain degree of luck. I meant to strike the ball like that, but you never know beforehand how it will actually turn out.

Question: Please be serious though, that was a fine goal. How did it feel?

Müller: It felt good. I controlled the ball well with my chest and just had to get a shot on target somehow. I did that and when I saw the ball go in it was just a great feeling. But I don’t want to big it up too much just because it looked good. The goals I score that are not as attractive, are worth just as much as the good ones.

Question: How important was it for the team to come back into the game after Sandro Wagner had given Darmstadt the lead?

Müller: We showed that we have good spirit and we are happy to have come away with three important points. Darmstadt played well and made it difficult for us to play our game. We’ve seen that a few times this season already, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Bayern won a home game, extending their run in the Allianz Arena - nothing unusual.

Question: What type of game do you expect on Tuesday night in the Champions League against Juventus?

Müller: I expect a difficult game. Juve are a team with a lot of experience, quality and they defend really well. But overall I’ve had good experiences in Turin. The stadium is fantastic - new and small. The atmosphere was great when we played there and won 2-0. I look forward to it.

Question: Are you worried that you are currently missing your tall centre backs, especially in regard to Juve having several specialists in the air with Pogba and Morata?

Müller: No, I’m not worried. Obviously in some situations it’s an advantage to have a two metre tall player on the pitch, but all in all we’ve managed quite well in recent games. We don’t have any other choice but to do a good job anyway.

Question: Bayern’s chance-conversion was poor in the first half and something you definitely want to avoid from happening in Turin on Tuesday.

Müller: You know going into a game with Darmstadt, that you won’t be creating many chances. That’s why it wasn’t good from us to waste so many chances and we really had problems with that. We should’ve taken a one or two goal lead but instead we trailed Darmstadt at half-time. We definitely need a different performance in Turin. We have to be more clinical with our chances on Tuesday.
