Müller helps Bayern to UCL semis, ter Stegen’s Barca out

FC Bayern München have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for a fifth consecutive season. A 2-2 draw in Lisbon was enough to take the record German champions to the final four, having already secured a 1-0 home win in the first leg.

Raúl Jimenez put the hosts ahead in the 27th minute, cancelling out the advantage Bayern built for themselves in Munich by heading past Manuel Neuer. However, there was plenty of time for the visitors to score a precious away goal and it didn’t take long to come. Philipp Lahm’s drilled cross in the 38th minute was punched away by Ederson, but Arturo Vidal volleyed the rebound into the open net to level the scores.

The second half started well for Bayern, as Die Mannschaft’s Thomas Müller turned home Javi Martinez’s header down to leave Benfica needing three goals. They pulled one back in the 77th minute via Anderson Talisca’s stunning free kick, but FCB held on to secure their place in Friday’s semi-final draw.

Barcelona miss out on semis

While Müller, Neuer & Co. enjoyed progression in Lisbon, it was a night to forget for fellow Germany international Marc-André ter Stegen in Madrid. His Barcelona side were beaten 2-0 by Atletico, overturning the Catalan club’s 2-1 first-leg victory. Barca were also knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid back in 2014. This time, a brace from Antoine Griezmann was enough to see the hosts through to the semi-finals, with the Frenchman beating ter Stegen from the penalty spot to net his fifth goal of the competition this season.
