Müller: "Already playing well as a team"

Thomas Müller was FC Bayern München's star on Bundesliga matchday 3, as the Bavarian side recorded a 3-0 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen with the Germany international bagging the first two goals. The World Cup winner has already bagged five goals from three games so far this season.

In an interview with DFB.de Müller talks about the game with Leverkusen, his impressive goal haul at the start of the season, his new teammates at FC Bayern and his personal role within the team.

DFB.de: Mr. Müller, was that a perfect evening for you personally?

Thomas Müller: Perfect evenings don't exist in football, but the 3-0 victory was certainly very satisfying as we played against a quality opponent, who can make life very difficult for you and they did that for long spells of the match. However, we found space to play into and Leverkusen were probably slightly tired after their game on Wednesday, when they were fighting to qualify for the Champions League. We created good chances by playing down the wings – that was our plan from the start.

DFB.de: What was your plan exactly for this match?

Müller: Leverkusen have a very aggressive approach when they don’t have the ball, and they take a lot of risks. Once you get the ball past their first wave of defence, you have a chance to create something dangerous. There were a few situations where we could've executed our attacks better, but overall we are very satisfied with the 3-0 win.

DFB.de: How did you manage to integrate the new players so quickly?

Müller: Players with a lot of quality don't need a lot of time to find their place in a new team. That's always been the case. Douglas [Costa] and Arturo [Vidal] are two great guys. We have a lot of quality players and we are already playing well together as a team.

DFB.de: Are you playing a different role this season, to suit the new players who've come in?

Müller: I wouldn't say that I'm playing a specific new role. I'm playing the same way I've always played since joining FC Bayern.

DFB.de: The next player who might need to be integrated is Kingsley Coman. Do you know him already?

Müller: I'm not sure if it has been confirmed that he will join us or if I'm even allowed to talk about it. Obviously I read what the papers say, but I haven't met him personally.

DFB.de: How do you rate your personal start to the season with five goals from three games?

Müller: It's my best start ever to a season, but a win is still only worth three points no matter how many goals I score.

DFB.de: You declined scoring a hat-trick in order to let Arjen Robben take the second penalty.

Müller: I'm a team player and I want the atmosphere in the club to be good and to stay that way. We have a ranking on who takes penalties and we all know what this ranking looks like. Arturo [Vidal] took the penalty in the DFB Cup, when neither Arjen nor I were still on the pitch.
