Moving memorial for Junior Malanda

Friends, family and teammates honoured Junior Malanda with a moving memorial. Around 1300 people gathered in the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Brussels-Koekelberg to pay their last respects to the Belgian international. The 20-year-old died in a fatal car crash on the A2 motorway near Porta Westfalica on 10th January.

Many guests wore a VfL Wolfsburg shirt with the midfielder’s name. Malanda’s body will be laid to rest in the Sint-Agatha-Berchem Communal Cemetery.

All VfL Wolfsburg players, head coach Dieter Hecking, Managing Director Klaus Allofs and Chairman Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz attended the funeral. The bow on the wreath read: “Forever in our hearts.”

DFL plans to honour Malanda

Chelsea star Eden Hazard and his colleagues from the Belgian national team were also among the guests. The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) plans to officially honour Malanda for the first week and a half after the Bundesliga commences. Hosting clubs are advised to plan a minute of silence and the teams can choose to wear a black ribbon.
