Mittag and Angerer get under way with victories

Nadine Angerer and Anja Mittag got their domestic seasons under way with a victory this weekend. Angerer’s Portland Thorns (NWSL, USA) and Mittag’s FC Rosengard (Damallsvenskan, Sweden) achieved clear victories. Angerer was an unused substitute; Mittag picked up where she left off last season – by getting her name on the scoresheet.

FC Rosengard beat KIF Örebro DFF 4-1 in front of 1,418 in the Behrn Arena (Örebro’s home ground). The hosts took the lead through Sarah Michael in the 29th minute; Mittag levelled for Rosengard after 51 minutes. Ramona Bachmann’s brace (69’, 76’) and a goal from Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir (74’) sealed a comfortable victory for Rosengard, who are top of the table already.

Portland Thorns’ opening NWSL game say them beat the Boston Breakers 4-1 in front of 13,386 supporters in Providence Park. Portland’s goals were scored by Sinead Farrelly (21’), Mana Shim (38’) and a rapid brace from Allie Long (71’, 72’); Stephanie McCaffrey (63’) scored for the visitors.

Thorns head coach Paul Riley left Nadine Angerer on the bench for the game; she only returned to America on Friday after Wednesday’s friendly success over Brazil in Fürth. Michelle Betos started instead. “We thought that it would be better to rest Nadine,” said Riley. “She trained on Friday and was still feeling the strain of her journey.”
