Meyer sets up Baba’s winner for Schalke

Olympic silver-medalist Max Meyer played a big part in FC Schalke 04 securing an opening away victory in the Europa League against OGC Nice. The Germany international came off the bench in the 58th minute and gave the assist for Abdul Rahman Baba’s winner in the 75th minute.

The team from Gelsenkirchen impressed twenty years on from the triumphant campaign of the “Eurofighter” when they won the UEFA Cup, as they showed passion and fight. However, Markus Weinzierl’s side struggled to capitalize on the numerous times they won the ball in the opponents half, creating few clear chances, until they were final rewarded for their hard work fifteen minutes from time.

It was a disappointing start for Mainz on their European debut as the Zerofivers conceded a late equaliser and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against AS Saint- Étienne. In front of 20,275 spectators at the Opel Arena, Niko Bungert scored Mainz’s first European goal in the 57th minute as they took the lead against the French record champions, who drew against current French Champions Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend. The Bundesliga side’s dream of three points to start their Europa League campaign was however crushed in the 87th minute by Robert Beric’s late equaliser.

Rouven Schröder spoke to Sky following the game: “We came out strongly in the second half, put pressure on and took the lead. We had earned the three points. The lads are annoyed now that they have only come away with a point.”
