Meyer leads Schalke to victory - Aubameyang strikes late in Dortmund win

Germany U21 international Max Meyer and full Germany international Leroy Sané secured Schalke’s 2-0 victory at Darmstadt 98 on Bundesliga matchday 19, with the two youngsters assisting one another’s goals. Dortmund required a late brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to record a 2-0 home win over Ingolstadt. Bayer 04 Leverkusen and a very active Karim Bellarabi produced a comfortable 3-0 win against Hannover 96. The game between Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC produced six goals but no winner, as they share the points following an entertaining 3-3 draw. No goals were scored between FC Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Germany U21 international Johannes Geis produced the first opportunity for Schalke when his free kick struck the outside of the post midway through the first half. Schalke’s youngsters were back in action shortly ahead of the half-time whistle as Leroy Sané’s excellent run down the left hand side produced a goal-mouth scramble from which Max Meyer emerged with the ball to slot home from short range. The second half saw Meyer return the favour to Sané, as the Germany international kept his nerve against Darmstadt’s keeper Christian Mathenia following a clever pass from Meyer.

Aubameyang brace gives Dortmund late win

Borussia Dortmund were forced to replace Germany internationals Marco Reus and Ilkay Gündogan prior to their clash with Ingolstadt due to a viral infection. Dortmund struggled against Ingolstadt’s early pressing and were fortunate not to fall behind after 30 minutes when keeper Roman Bürki had already been beaten by Dario Lezcano’s chip, but World Cup winner Mats Hummels and Lukasz Piszczek managed to clear the ball off the line with a combined effort.

The hosts kept struggling after the restart and were fortunate when referee Sascha Stegemann decided to disallow an own goal from Mats Hummels following an alleged foul from Lezcano. Africa’s Player of the Year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took his tally to 20 goals this season with a late brace to secure a rather fortunate victory for Dortmund.

Chicharito double in Leverkusen victory

Bayer 04 Leverkusen controlled the game against Hannover 96 from the start but only took the lead shortly before the break when Stefan Kießling’s header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner kick found the back of the net. The hosts remained the dominant team in the second half and Mexico international Javier Hernandez provided two goals, giving Leverkusen a thoroughly deserved 3-0 victory over bottom side Hannover.

Pizarro scores during Werder comeback

Visitors Hertha BSC took the lead through Vladimir Darida after 29 minutes in Bremen’s Weser-Stadion. They doubled their lead before the break when Werder keeper Felix Wiedwald failed to keep out a direct free kick attempt by Marvin Plattenhardt. Finn Bartels restored hope midway through the second half by cutting into Hertha’s lead, but Salomon Kalou quickly restored their two-goal advantage four minutes later. But the hosts were unwilling to back down and were back in the game when Claudio Pizarro converted from the spot, more than 16 years after making his Bundesliga debut against Hertha BSC. SVW used their momentum to level the score two minutes later, when Santiago Garcia’s header settled in the back of the net.

The game between FC Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt featured a shortage of clear-cut chances, mainly due to the defensive discipline both teams brought to the pitch. Daniel Baier had the only real chance of the first half denied by Frankfurt keeper Lukas Hradecky. Augsburg remained the more dangerous side in the second half, but were unable to take advantage from this as the game ended in a goalless draw.
