Mesut Özil’s among Europe’s top scorers after seventh qualifying goal

Mesut Özil has now scored seven goals in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, putting the German in a tie for third place with Bosnia’s Vedad Ibisevic in the European top scorers’ table.

However, with World Cup qualifying drawing to a close, Özil is unlikely to become Europe’s leading goalscorer. Dutch striker Robin van Persie heads the list with 11 goals, followed by Edin Dzeko (Bosnia-Herzegovina) on 10. Germany face Sweden in Stockholm on Tuesday night having already won Group C, whilst the Netherlands, who have also qualified, travel to Istanbul to play Turkey. Meanwhile Bosnia, who are currently level on points with Greece at the top of Group G, meet Lithuania in Kaunas.

Belize’s Deon McCaulay is the only other player worldwide to have equalled Van Persie’s tally of 11 goals, while Lionel Messi is the leading marksman in the South American zone with ten goals. Germany are also among the world’s highest scoring teams, with 31 goals from nine World Cup qualifiers. New Caledonia top the table with 36, followed by Argentina (33), the Netherlands, Antigua (32 each) and Germany (31).
