Melanie Leupolz: "It feels like a film"

DFB.de:What happens now?

Leupolz: Party! We’re going to celebrate. Our families and friends were in the stadium and we will have something to eat and drink with them. After then, who knows! We certainly won’t be sleeping much, there’s no time for that. We need to celebrate an incredible season.

DFB.de: The World Cup takes place in a few weeks…

Leupolz: That will be the next highlight for sure. I’m pretty sure that winning the league will give me confidence ahead of the tournament in Canada. We want to make history. We’ll celebrate for a couple of days but then it’s back to work.

The men’s and women’s team at FC Bayern München have both been crowned German champions for the 2014/15 season. Many expected Pep Guardiola’s team to lift the title, but it was somewhat surprising to see Thomas Wörle’s men celebrating on the final matchday of the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga.

It was a dramatic three way shootout for the title with Wolfsburg and Frankfurt – the Bavarians eventually came out on top. 27-time Germany international Melanie Leupolz certainly enjoyed her day. The 21-year-old opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over SGS Essen and impressed throughout the match. After the game DFB.de spoke to her about the title success.

DFB.de: Ms. Leupolz, congratulations on winning the title…

Melanie Leupolz: ...it still sounds incredibly strange to hear people say that! It’s incredible. I never really thought that we would lift the title; I was mainly focussed on beating Essen so that we could qualify for the Champions League. That would have been sensational, but to lift the title is simply incredible. I’m lost for words.

DFB.de: When did you know the situation?

Leupolz: We didn’t receive any information from the game in Frankfurt whilst we were playing...

DFB.de: ...even at the break when FFC were winning 1-0?

Leupolz: No, not even then. We only wanted to focus on our own situation.

DFB.de: And in the end how did you find out about the success?

Leupolz: At the end of our game we were told that Frankfurt were drawing 1-1 but we also knew that there were three or four minutes to go. The stadium was silent as we waited for the final whistle and then the supporters suddenly exploded with joy and at that moment we knew we’d done it. It was amazing!

DFB.de: You were part of the leading pack all season – had you thought about winning the title?

Leupolz: Not really, however, we were always looking forward and setting ourselves new targets throughout the season. This was probably the right approach to be honest.

DFB.de: You’re the only team to have gone through the season unbeaten. What makes FC Bayern so strong?

Leupolz: Our team spirit, without a shadow of a doubt. We were a unit from day one. There are no outsiders or trouble makers in the camp. We all worked as one to achieve our goals.

DFB.de: You arrived in Munich last summer. Was this success a dream come true?

Leupolz: Of course. I’ll need a few days for it all to sink in. It feels like I’m in a movie!
