Meinert: “We stood up to the challenge well”

The Germany U20s women have made a perfect start to the World Cup in Papua New Guinea. Maren Meinert’s team have six points in the bag after their first two group matches, following their 3-0 victory over Mexico today and the 3-1 opening-game win against Venezuela. DFB.de brings you all the reaction from the match with Mexico.

Maren Meinert: It was very tight in the first half and there was little to separate both teams. I don’t know what would have happened if Mexico had gone in front. Mexico have really strong attacking players but then we got some luck in the second half. However I have to pay tribute to my team since we stood up to the challenge well today and deserved to win. I am very happy with the performance.

Stefanie Antonia Sanders: We are all really pleased with how we’ve started the tournament and how the match went today. Getting three points was very important. Obviously I am delighted with my two goals. For the first goal I actually only had to stick out my foot because Anna set me up perfectly. It was a huge relief when the ball then went in. I didn’t take my chances in the last game, so I am delighted that I could help the team with my two goals today. We are already looking forward to the third group game and want to play exactly the same way as today.

Anna Gerhardt: Of course I’m glad that I was able to set up my teammates to score. But the team’s performance is the priority. We will regenerate and recover today and will have a casual training session tomorrow. Then we will start preparing for the next game.

Carina Schlüter: We battled well and in the end we deserved the victory. We worked hard from the first minute to the last which is what we set out to do and it led to an excellent second match for us. We need to build on this in the third group game so that we can achieve our next goal, to reach the quarter-finals. We have started everything really well in this tournament and have had two good matches. We want that to continue.

Saskia Matheis: I am glad that I managed to hit it towards that corner and that it went in. It’s absolutely fantastic to score a goal but it’s even better when the team gets a win like we did today, so we are really happy that we have started the tournament so well. We are close to making it to the quarter-finals, which is what we had all hoped for.

Melanie Ott: It was an even game. We struggled during parts of the first half despite playing well at the back. We were much more solid in the second half and our goals really highlighted that. We’ve scored six goals and picked up 6 points from our first two matches, which we can be very satisfied with. But we can’t switch off because we have our third group game coming up.
