Meinert names EURO squad

Germany manager Maren Meinert has named her squad for the Women’s U19 European Championship in Northern Ireland (August 8th – 20th 2017). 18 players born in the years of 1998, 1999, and 2000, are travelling to Northern Ireland fully aware of what they aim to accomplish: World Cup qualification.

“Our goal for the EURO is very clear: we want to reach the semi-final and in doing so qualify for the 2018 U20 World Cup in France, in order to make sure that we give the girls as much tournament experience as they can possibly get,” said Meinert on her team’s goals.

Meinert: “We can’t wait for the finals”

Group A sees Germany play Scotland in Belfast on August 8th (16:00 CEST), before they play 2004 European Champions Spain on August 11th (16:00 CEST) in Portadown. The final group-stage game comes against the hosts in Ballymena on August 14th (20:00 CEST).

“We’re expecting two teams that are strong in the challenge in the form of Scotland and hosts Northern Ireland, who are also compact defensively. Spain are a good team with a lot of experience in major tournaments, and are certainly one of the best teams in Europe,” said Meinert on her group-stage opponents, clearly excited to get started: “We can’t wait for the finals in Northern Ireland in August, after we’ve had a successful year so far which culminated in the highlight that was qualifying emphatically for the finals. The friendly against the USA was an invaluable opportunity to acquire more experience and knowledge.”
