Max Meyer: "Unfortunately my goal wasn’t enough"

FC Schalke 04 attacking midfielder wasn't sure how to feel after the game with record Bundesliga champions FC Bayern on matchday 13. The Royal Blues suffered a 3-1 defeat despite a solid performance from the Germany U21 international. Schalke are now without a win from their last seven games.

The 20-year-old had scored a first half equaliser in his 75th Bundesliga appearance, but it was not enough to prevent the table toppers from claiming all three points. DFB.de spoke with Meyer about the defeat, his career to date and Schalke's young guns.

Question: Max Meyer, how did you see the 3-1 home defeat to FC Bayern?

Max Meyer: I think that we put up a good fight until we conceded the second goal. We didn't allow Bayern any clear chances. Sure, they had a lot of possession and looked dominant. But I think we performed well overall. After conceding an unnecessary goal we then had to open up at the back which led to more chances for them.

Question: Describe your goal for us please.

Meyer: I received the ball from Leroy, after we made crossing runs. Obviously I was really happy to score the goal, especially because it was an important one which put us level again with Bayern. But in the end it wasn't enough unfortunately.

Question: Schalke are now without a win from their last seven games. Has the confidence level in the squad been affected?

Meyer: I wouldn't say so. We play a game every three or four days and will get a new opportunity to make things right again. On Thursday we play in the Europa League and I'm confident that we will get a win there.

Question: You've played a lot of games this season already but there are no signs that you're running out of energy. Are you feeling the strain of playing so many games?

Meyer: It's been a lot of games in a short timeframe and obviously you notice your legs getting heavier from the 70th or 80th minute onwards. But we focus a lot on regeneration during the week and training isn’t as tough then. It's not really a problem.

Question: Schalke have a very young team this season and you are one of their key players. Does that add any extra pressure?

Meyer: Everyone has pressure going into a game. I think that's normal but I don't have problems falling asleep the night prior to a game. I just try to enjoy myself when I'm on the pitch and I think the others try to do the same. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

Question: You've made 75 Bundesliga appearances already at a very young age. Does that make you proud?

Meyer: Definitely. I'm only 20 years old and I've already made a lot of appearances - it's great. I can still remember my first appearance really well, because it actually wasn’t that long ago. I know that I need to keep working hard in order to add many more games to my tally.

Question: Your next opponent in the Bundesliga is Leverkusen. What will be your aim in that game?

Meyer: We wanted to win against Bayern, so obviously we will try to win in Leverkusen as well.
