Matthias Sammer leaves FC Bayern München

Sporting director Matthias Sammer has elected to leave FC Bayern München. The 48-year-old was contracted to the record champions until 2018, but they have agreed to terminate his deal early. Sammer missed the back end of the 2015/16 campaign having discovered a “tiny circulatory disorder of the brain" in April 2016. Despite recovering, he has chosen not to return to the Bavarians.

“I'm very well. The extensive medical examinations have absolutely confirmed that I'm healthy again,” explained Sammer. He added that “being FC Bayern's sporting director means I have to be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day with all my energy, for the club, the team and also the public. I don't want to take on these tasks at the moment.”

Sammer is unlikely to be replaced, as the club look to restructure operations. He originally took the position in 2012. In his first season in the role he helped the club, who were managed by Jupp Heynckes, lift the treble. Since then he has helped Pep Guardiola’s men win three consecutive titles and two DFB Cups.

FC Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “In the many discussions with Matthias I've understood that he has taken a different, a new view on life when he was on leave in the last few months. He has other priorities now, and his position at FC Bayern isn't compatible with them any longer.”
