Marozsan: “Will be a battle”

There are just three days to go until the Germany Women’s opening match of the European Championship against Sweden on Monday (20:45 CEST). The final touches are being put in place in training and the excitement is growing. DFB.de brings you what team captain Dzsenifer Marozsan and assistant coach Markus Högner had to say ahead of the tournament.

Dzsenifer Marozsan on…

... the last match against Sweden in the Olympic final: I have great memories of the match against Sweden at the Maracana Stadium. It was an unforgettable final but now we are playing them in a new tournament and we start at 0-0. Now we will see what the score is at the end.

Preparations for the tournament: I think the way we have been preparing has been very positive. We also took a lot from the friendlies we had. You can see on the pitch with the good football the team has playing. I am personally satisfied with how things are going am looking forward to getting started with the tournament soon.

… her role as captain: I was not expecting to be appointed by Steffi Jones but ultimately I am incredibly grateful that she has put her trust in me. This is the next step for me to take. This is an outstanding team which is why I don’t feel like a player that is above anybody else. I am just a bit older. Being the captain and playing abroad is a combination that has taken me forward both in terms of sport and as a person. I don’t feel any extra pressure as the captain. I just give my best and obviously am pleased that I have scored a lot of goals against Sweden in the past. I will also be giving it my best this time round.

… the pressure as champions: We have won the European Championship six times. It will be tough to win another because women’s football is becoming a lot more even.

Markus Högner on…

… Dzsenifer Marozsan: I got to know Dzsenni during the matches against Frankfurt. She was an outstanding player even back then. Now she is world class. Furthermore she is a very modest person and ranks among the highest in the team. I enjoy every day that I get to work with her.

… the opposition Sweden: If you look at the last three games that Sweden have played, they had nine players on the pitch that also played in the Olympic final, so they have not changed their side all that much. Sweden are a physical and robust team but I have a positive feeling that we can perform well.

… the cooperation between the coaches: Steffi is a team player, she always brings myself and the rest of the coaching staff along with her in whatever she is doing but she is the one who takes decisions in the end. My task is to back her and I hope that I can fulfill that role well.
