Mario Gomez lifts the title

Die Mannschaft striker Mario Gomez helped Besiktas wrap up the Turkish Championship on the penultimate weekend of the season. It also looks likely that he will win finish the campaign as the division’s leading scorer. His side beat Osmanlispor FK 3-1 on Sunday.

Former Hannover 96 player Marcelo grabbed a quickfire brace (21’, 24’) before Gomez made it 3-0 after the break. He now has 26 league goals to his name, six more than closest rival Samuel Eto'o (Antalysapor).

Galatasaray still chasing Europe

Former Germany star Andreas Beck (VfB Stuttgart and 1899 Hoffenheim) plays for Besiktas, as do a number of players with a Bundesliga past: Gökhan Töre (Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV), Tolgay Arslan (Borussia Dortmund, HSV, Alemannia Aachen) and Cenk Tosun (Eintracht Frankfurt).

This title is Besiktas 14th, but their first for seven years. Gomez has now lifted four national championships (2007 with Stuttgart, 2010 and 2013 with Bayern München). He was the Bundesliga’s top scorer in 2011.

Galatasaray, who were without World Cup winner Lukas Podolski, beat Akhisar Belediyespor 2-1 and remain in the race for a European spot. They are sixth in the table (48 points) – one fewer than Osmanlispor (5th).

Arsenal finish second

Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker helped the Gunners claim second spot in the Premier League. They thrashed relegated Aston Villa 4-0 on the final day of the season. Local rivals lost 5-1 in Newcastle. Arsenal end the campaign 10 points behind unlikely champions Leicester City, who drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Olivier Giroud helped himself to a treble, whilst their final goal came courtesy of Villa’s Mark Bunn in injury time. Özil created Giroud’s second but ends the campaign with 19 assists, one fewer than the current Premier League record, which was set by Thierry Henry in 2002/2003.

The 27-year-old had 16 to his name before Christmas, but his influence diminished since the turn of the year. Despite this, he recorded six more than nearest rival Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur).

Liverpool draw without Can

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who were without Emre Can, drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. They finish the season in eighth place and consequently miss out on the European spots, however, if they beat Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday they’ll reach the Champions League.
