Marco Reus sets BVB up for EL play-offs

Marco Reus fired Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund to victory in the return lef of the third qualifying round of the Europa League as BVB stormed to a 5-0 success over Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC and thus qualifying for the play-offs.

The Germany international was rewarded for his side’s effort in the 48th minute with his goal, following a first half in which Dortmund squandered many a chance. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (hat-trick) increased Dortmund’s lead late on. Last week’s first leg ended 1-0 in Austria. The play-off draw will take place on Friday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

BVB dominate from the off

From the first whistle, things very much resembled the first leg a week ago. BVB created many chances during the opening 15 minutes, linking up to bypass the deep Wolfsberger backline. It was only for BVB errors that the Austrian side were not behind at the break.

Aubameyang passed up the biggest chance, when his header was stopped by Wolfsberger keeper Alexander Kofler from seven metres out. Three minutes prior, Kofler’s clearance from outside the box fell to Mats Hummels, but the BVB captain’s long-range effort was cleared off the line by an opposition defender.

Reus breaks the deadlock

The second half went a lot better for Dortmund. Mkhitaryan immaculately set up Reus, who gave Kofler no chance from 13 metres. The Yellow-Blacks then dictated play more and more, with Aubameyang’s chip all but sealing the tie. Mkhitaryan then fired home with a spectacular 20-metre shot, before making it 4-0 with a fine solo effort in the closing stages. The Armenian then claimed the match ball two minutes later to top off an ultimately comfortable win.
