Manuel Neuer voted World's Best Goalkeeper

Bayern Munich and German international shot-stopper Manuel Neuer now has yet another acolade to add to his collection after being named the World's Best Goalkeeper for 2013. The 27-year-old topped the vote of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) ahead of Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus and Chelsea's Petr Cech. Real Madrid's Spanish keeper Iker Casillas had won the award for each of the previous five years.

According to the IFFHS, editorial staff and experts from 70 countries cast their votes in the poll. Oliver Kahn was previously awarded the accolade three times, in 1999, 2001 and 2002, while Andreas Köpke, the German national team's goalkeeping coach, was the recipient of the award in 1996 after helping the Nationalmannschaft to victory at EURO '96 in England.

Having won five titles with Bayern in the past year – the Champions League, German Championship, DFB Cup, European Supercup and Club World Cup – Neuer swept the poll with 211 votes, far ahead of Buffon (78) and Cech (64). Atletico Madrid's young Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois came fourth with 54 votes, followed by Barcelona's Victor Valdes (53) and Casillas (23).

FIFA will officially crown 2013's World Footballer of the Year at Zurich's Kongresshaus next Monday, where Neuer could also be named in the "FIFA/FIFPro World XI team" of 2013.
