Mandy Islacker: "Things can finally start"

The DFB-Team arrived in Brazil on Saturday. Their first game takes place in São Paulo on Wednesday against Zimbabwe (23:00 CEST). Ahead of the opening clash, DFB.de caught up with Mandy Islacker to preview the competition.

DFB.de: Ms. Islacker, you arrived in Brazil on Saturday. What are your thought on the place so far?

Mandy Islacker: We arrived at 05:00 and it was dark. It started to lighten up as we travelled to the hotel, which meant we could see the city. I liked what I saw! It’s incredible that so much goes on at 06:00 on a Saturday here.

DFB.de: How did the first day go?

Islacker: After breakfast we went to a park for a run. It was a lovely place, full of joggers and people doing other forms of exercise. The people are welcoming – a lot wanted pictures or to simply welcome us. You can definitely feel their warmth.

DFB.de: Do you feel part of the Olympics, despite the fact that you’re not based in Rio?

Islacker: I’d say so, yes. We saw a lot of other athletes at the airport and our opponents are staying in the same hotel. A lot of media teams were based at the airport waiting for us all to arrive.

DFB.de: You only made your international debut in October. Things have moved quickly...

Islacker: I can’t quite believe how much has happened. I was delighted to gain a place in the provisional squad. I knew that only 16 outfielders could come to Brazil, which hindered my chances. Coming here is a dream come true. Everyone wants to go to the Olympics. I never thought it’d happen to me though.

DFB.de: What’s the atmosphere like in the camp?

Islacker: We’ve been together for a number of weeks now and are all extremely excited. Things can finally start now.
