Mainz take Darmstadt by storm

The high-flying team of SV Darmstadt has been halted. The first match of the eighth matchday saw the Rheine-Main derby end in a 2-3 victory for guests FSV Mainz 05. Darmstadt’s Sandro Wagner missed a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time (90+6) and surrendered the opportunity to claim a late point.

The goals from Marcel Heller (27‘) and fan favourite Marco Sailer (57‘) were not enough in the end. Pablo de Blasis (64’) decided the match in favour of Mainz and Bell (15’) and Malli (24’) also played a part with their goals in the first half.

Heller’s solo effort keeps Darmstadt in the game

Darmstadt were unable to get a foothold in the game in the first half. Mainz found themselves two goals in front inside 24 minutes, and it wasn’t undeserved. Heller’s excellent finish kept his side in contention.

Darmstadt started the second half with a new-found passion and desire that had been lacking up to that point. And they got their equaliser. Heller and Konstantin Rausch linked up well on the left wing, and Sailer was in the right place to finish the move off. The Darmstadt fans erupted and the atmosphere changed once again.

The newly-promoted side were in fact closer to the win than Mainz at this point. De Blasis had other ideas though, and side footed the winner home in Darmstadt’s box, sparking wild celebration.
