Magic Müller helps Bayern comeback against Darmstadt

The Bundesliga record champions FC Bayern München avoided an upset against SV Darmstadt on matchday 22, as Germany international Thomas Müller bagged a brace to help turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 victory for the hosts. Borussia Mönchengladbach recorded a 1-0 Rhine Derby victory over 1. FC Köln, while the points were shared between Hertha BSC and VfL Wolfsburg in a 1-1 draw.

Julian Nagelsmann and TSG Hoffenheim secured a vital 3-2 victory against FSV Mainz 05, improving their position in the relegation battle. FC Ingolstadt also bagged three important points with their 2-0 home win over SV Werder Bremen.

Müller master-class saves Bayern

The early proceedings in the Allianz-Arena were, as expected, controlled by the hosts but they failed to take an early advantage. Instead, Darmstadt bagged a shock opener when former Germany U21 international Sandro Wagner headed home at the near post.

Bayern initially struggled to find a reply, but responded strongly in the second half with Müller levelling the score just four minutes after the restart. Darmstadt then succumbed to Bayern’s pressure and it seemed inevitable that Bayern would take the lead. Eventually, Müller produced a moment of magic when he took Vidal’s cross down with his chest and acrobatically guided the ball into the top corner with his back to the goal. Lewandowski rounded off the scoring with five minutes left to play, bagging his 22nd goal of the campaign.

Dahoud strike gives Gladbach edge in Rhine Derby

Gladbach had control of the Rhine Derby from the start, taking an early lead against visitors Köln when Raffael fed a wonderful ball through to U20 international Mahmoud Dahoud, who finished inside ten minutes. The game became more heated in the second half and Köln began to create more chances, but in the end Gladbach was able to hold on and claim the three points.

Quality was lacking in the match between Hertha and Wolfsburg, attended by Germany coach Joachim Löw. The spectators inside Berlin’s Olympiastadion were saw few chances for either side. Former Germany international Marcel Schäfer fired the visitors into the lead with a fine strike after 53 minutes, but Hertha responded promptly and brought the tie back to level through Salomon Kalou. Both teams looked for a late winner but in the end shared the points.

Ingolstadt earn crucial victory

FC Ingolstadt got off to the perfect start against Bremen when Benjamin Hübner scored the fastest goal in FCI’s Bundesliga history, giving them a lead after 12 minutes. Bremen invested more into their attack in the second half but Ingolstadt were able to survive several dangerous moments before Lukas Hinterseer’s converted penalty in the 90th minute ensured them the three points.

Julian Nagelsmann was forced to stomach an early set-back in his first home game in charge at TSG Hoffenheim. Jhon Cordoba’s opener gave Mainz the lead after 11 minutes, but their advantage didn’t last long as Nadiem Amiri equalised for TSG just two minutes later. The game developed into an entertaining affair, with chances at both ends.

Hoffenheim remained very active after the break and were rewarded when Mark Uth scored a brace to give them a 3-1 lead. Jairo Samperio pulled one back with more than ten minutes left to play, but Hoffenheim held on and celebrated a highly important victory.
