Magdeburg beat poor FCA, Wehen Wiesbaden advance and Stuttgart squeeze through

Déjà-vu for FC Augsburg. The Bundesliga side lost in the first round against 1. FC Magdeburg in a repeat of their match three years ago. The third tier side won 2-0 against the first division favourites. Also, SV Wehen Wiesbaden ran out 2-0 winners against Ergebirge Aue whilst VfB Stuttgart edged past Regionalliga side Energie Cottbus 4-3 on penalties

A long wait for a goal in Magdeburg

A true battle took place between Magdeburg and Augsburg this evening. Magdeburg started brightly but, despite their spell of pressure, nothing came of it. Jonathan Schmid had the visitors’ best chance but was denied by Magdeburg goalkeeper, Mario Seidel. Augsburg’s threat came too little, too late. Magdeburg took a deserved lead in the 87th minute thanks to Christian Beck. In additional time, Tobias Schwede put the game beyond doubt and the game ended 2-0.

Wehen Wiesbahn’s start shocks Aue

At the Brita Arena, Wehen Wiesbahn started immensely. Within seven minutes, the third tier side ran into a 2-0 lead, David Blacha scored from a corner and Stephan Andrist doubled the lead minutes later. The underdogs remained the domineering team and Aue simply could not get into the game - in fact they were lucky to not be further behind at half-time. In the second half, Aue improved but were unable to get past goalkeeper Markus Kolke.

Stuttgart squeeze past Regionalliga side Energie Cottbus on penalties

After a dramatic penalty shootout, newly promoted Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart advanced into the second round of the cup by the skin of their teeth. Energie Cottbus started the game impressively and went 1-0 up after just five minutes through Fabio Viteritti and doubled their advantage over the side plying their trade three divisions above them on 28 minutes courtesy of a scorching Maximillian Zimmer free-kick.

Stuttgart had to come out of the blocks in the second half quickly and quickly they did, Josip Brekalo halving the deficit with a wonderful solo effort just four minutes after the break. It was all hands to the pump for the Cottbus defence after that and a piece of bad luck came to Stuttgart's rescue, a freak own-goal from José-Junior Matuwila with 78 minutes on the clock. A stalemate ensued for the rest of normal time and extra time with neither team wanting to give in in what was a hard-fought battle.

The lottery of penalty kicks followed and the Regionalliga side were the first to slip up, Ziegenbein's effort hitting the post to give Stuttgart an opportunity to win it. However, Meyer in the Cottbus goal put the tie back in his team's hands with a fabulous save but the celebrations were short-lived as Förster missed the following spot-kick to hand victory to the three-time DFB Pokal winners and book their place in the second round draw.
