Luisa Wensing out of World Cup qualifiers

Luisa Wensing has withdrawn from the Germany squad for the Women’s World Cup qualifying double-header against Russia in Moscow on 13 September (live on ARD from 14:45) and against Ireland in Heidenheim on 17 September (live on ARD from 18:00).

The VfL Wolfsburg defender ruptured a ligament in her left foot while training with her club. National coach Silvia Neid has declined to call up a replacement, meaning the Germany women will contest their last two World Cup qualifiers with a 20-strong squad. The regulations allow for a maximum of 18 players in the final matchday squad.

Wensing is the seventh player forced to pull out of the World Cup qualifying campaign. Alongside long-term absentees Lena Lotzen, Saskia Bartusiak and Leonie Maier, injury caused the withdrawal of Nadine Keßler, Alexandra Popp and Bianca Schmidt, while Lira Alushi will serve out a one-match suspension against the Russians.
