Looking back at Rio: The World Champions on TV

Awards, Nominations, Reviews and Charity Fundraisers: The time around Christmas and New Year is packed full of high-profile appearances for the National Team who were recently awarded the Silver Laurel leaf by the German President Joachim Gauck. DFB.de is going to tell you when and where you can catch Löw, Lahm and Co. over the holiday period.

Why not Manuel Neuer? If the German Sports Personality of the Year 2014 were to be decided by public vote or through a representative survey, the chances of the German goalkeeper winning would undoubtedly be higher. But as it stands, choosing the nation’s favourite athlete is down to 3000 sports journalists and as has been the case since 1947 when Gottfried von Cramm became the first to pick up the award, the voters have almost always preferred awarding it to individual athletes.

The Exceptions: Nowitzki and Urbanczyk

Only twice has the unspoken rule of the German Sports Personality of the Year been broken. The last time was in 2011 when basketball-superstar Dirk Nowitzki won the award after becoming Western NBA-Champion with the Dallas Mavericks. And in 1964, footballer Klaus Urbanczyk won the award after achieving Bronze for East Germany in the Tokyo Olympics.

So history says that it won’t be one of the world cup winners; Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Jerome Boateng, but for the third time in a row, it could be discus thrower Robert Harting stood on the stage of the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden on the 21st December. The European Champion is again this year’s favourite. But on the other hand, history also teaches us that it could possibly be Neuer, Schweinsteiger or Boateng stood there instead. The German National team have already won Team of the Year on nine previous occasions and in a World Cup winning year, the chances of winning it again are looking great.

Löw on the Sports Person of the Year, “Ein Herz für Kinder” and the End of Year Review

The World Cup winning coach will in any case be at the event in Baden-Baden as he will be a special guest at the 68th Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on the 21st December which will be broadcast by ZDF between 22:00 and 23:45 (UTC+01:00). The pre-Christmas celebration in the Spa-town will mark the end of Joachim Löw’s post-World Cup Television appearances.

More appearances: “Ein Herz für Kinder” (One heart for Children) will hold their annual charity Gala on the 6th December. The event will be presented by Johannes B. Kerner and will also be broadcast by ZDF. 60 Celebrities will try to match last year’s haul of 16 million Euros which will be donated to children’s charities. The money will be used to support children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds; donations will also go to soup kitchens, schools, clinics and nurseries.

Günter Jauch has invited the national coach to appear on his end of year review show “2014! Menschen, Bilder, Emotionen” (2014! People, Pictures and Emotions) which will be shown live on RTL on the 7th December (from 20:15 UTC+01:00). Emotion – in 2014, only one moment comes to mind; Rio, 13th July in the 113th minute of the World Cup Final. Relive this golden moment of German football on the 5th December (from 21:15 UTC +01:00). The president of the German Football Association, Wolfgang Niersbach is also a guest on “Menschen 2014” (People of 2014) on ZDF. This schedule has been run in exactly the same way since 1982 with Frank Elstner presenting the shows in the early years. This year’s host will be Markus Lanz.

“Ballon d’Or” on the 12th January 2015 in Zurich

For the national coach, the New Year could begin with a worldwide television appearance, namely, on the 12th January at the “Ballon D’or” Ceremony at FIFA HQ in Zurich when the winner of Coach of the Year will be announced. Currently, Joachim Löw is on the shortlist along with ten other candidates – Carlo Ancelotti who won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, Antonio Conte, manager of Juventus, Jose Mourinho from Chelsea and Manuel Pellegrini who won the English Premier League with Manchester City make up some of the other candidates.

Löw could also be joined on stage by one of his players. Six of the world cup winning squad have also been nominated for the “Ballon d’Or”. On the 1st December the judges will cut the list down to three for the title of World Footballer of the Year. Does Manuel Neuer deserve to be part of this elite group of players? Definitely.
