Löw's team breaks 32-year-old goalscoring record

Germany not only managed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil with ease but also surpassed a 32-year-old DFB goalscoring record in the process.

By scoring five goals in their final qualifying match – a 5-3 victory over group runners-up Sweden at the Friends Arena in the Stockholm suburb of Solna – national team coach Joachim Löw's team took their World Cup qualifying goal tally to 36, two more than West Germany scored on their way to the 1982 finals in Spain. National team coach Jupp Derwall's team notched up some high-scoring victories during that qualifying campaign, including 7-1 against Finland and 8-0 against Albania. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored nine times, with Klaus Fischer netting another seven goals.

The current Germany team only scored fewer than three goals once in ten qualifying matches, in their 2-1 win in Austria, whilst the highlight of the campaign was undoubtedly their convincing 6-1 win over Ireland in Dublin.

Mesut Özil was the highest-scoring player in the DFB goalscoring list with eight goals, followed by Marco Reus with five goals. Miroslav Klose, Thomas Müller, Mario Götze and Tuesday's hat-trick hero André Schürrle all scored four whilst Toni Kroos found the target on three occasions. Özil's Arsenal team-mate Per Mertesacker scored two goals from central defence, and defensive midfielders Ilkay Gündogan and Sami Khedira netted one apiece.
