Löw wins German Media Award

World Cup winning head coach Joachim Löw was honoured with the German Media Award on Friday in Baden-Baden. “It’s a very special award for me. The list of previous winners is illustrious and impressive. I’m delighted to now be a member of such a select group,” said the 54-year-old, who guided Germany to success in Brazil this summer, after the ceremony.

"His style of leadership and style of play have made the national team modern, open and likeable. The team is an ambassador for Germany,” explained the judging panel, which is made up of the editors of leading newspapers and magazines. Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister for Special Affairs, echoed these sentiments in his speech.

The award also honoured the work Löw has put in over the years. “He had a vision of a team, full of top players, and brought them together, despite different backgrounds, experiences and personalities, and made them proud to play for Germany,” added the panel. Löw “remained poised even when faced with the changing opinions put his way by the media.” He created a team that won Germany their first World Cup in 24 years thanks to their performance levels, passion and cohesion.

Löw added: “There have been a number and honours and prizes after the World Cup, but this one is special because it takes into account the hard work of previous years too.”

The award has been handed out annually since 1992. Previous winners include Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schröder, the late Nobel Peace Prize winners Yassir Arafat and Nelson Mandela. as well as actor George Clooney.
