Löw: „We can play a good tournament“

It was tremendously important for German head coach Joachim Löw that his side “travels with a win and a comfortable feeling to South Africa” after Germany won 3:1 against Bosnia in it’s last match before the start of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa (June 11th – July 11th).

Löw is convinced, that “we can play a good tournament.” Here’s the latest interview with the head coach:

Question: What do you think about your team’s dress rehearsal against Bosnia, prior to the World Cup?

Joachim Löw: We wanted a tough game at the conclusion of our preparations towards the World Cup. Especially in half time two we succeeded to play with a lot of passion and with great pressure. It was very difficult to stop us. We had good scoring opportunities in the first half that we missed. It is important to me that we go to South Africa with a win and a comfortable feeling.

Question: Your team got rolling following the insertions of Thomas Müller and Cacau. Did those two play themselves into the starting line-up for the World Cup?

Löw: I don’t like the concept of a regular starting line-up. A team needs to find itself in the course of a tournament. There’s a development that takes place. It is needless to say that we rely on players, such as Cacau and Müller, who were present from the off when they got in and succeeded to leave their mark on the match.

Question: How did you like Holger Badstuber’s performance as left defender?

Löw: In the first minutes of the match he was still a bit nervous, but that’s normal, if you play from the start. He improved and won all of his tackles in the second half. That’s why I’m very satisfied.

Question: In central defence everything is looking like Per Mertesacker partnering Arne Friedrich…

Löw: A coach doesn’t like it very much to change the central defence, because you need a well-rehearsed duo. Arne Friedrich convinced me enormously during our preparation. He is an important player for the team on and off the pitch, too.

Question: How do you evaluate Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira’s performance in holding midfield?

Löw: I liked that, both were very present. Furthermore Sami had a few good scenes on offence, he was dangerous in the box. The organisation was already very good, although we’ll have to do a bit of fine tuning in the next week. I liked it as well that Mesut Özil had a bigger impact in the second half.

Question: However, Miroslav Klose’s performance must worry you…

Löw: I didn’t expect a major improvement after only three or four days. Klose still needs a bit of playing practice. He still needs a few good training sessions and he is going to get that in South Africa. Then Miroslav Klose will prove to everybody what he is capable of.

Question: After many injuries limited your options, what is the character of this German team?

Löw: We have young players, who have very good skills. Our potential is high. Everybody worked hard but we still have one week of hard work ahead of us. We have a good team with enormous will. Everybody shows much passion in training. That’s why I’m positive that we can play a good tournament. I have absolute confidence in my team.
