Löw: "Unexpected and totally unnecessary"

Die Mannschaft were beaten 1-0 in Dublin by The Republic of Ireland and missed the chance to secure qualification with a game to spare. The next and final chance to qualify for the European Championship in France 2016 is on Sunday (20:45 CEST) in Leipzig against Georgia. DFB.de have collaborated the match reactions of the players and manager.

Manager Joachin Löw: "It was an unexpected and totally unnecessary defeat. I can’t fault the team’s fighting spirit, but we failed to show the composure and quality to score goals. We were the dominant side, but couldn’t make the dominance count. In the second half, we were a bit too careless. We lacked the final ball. Then we make one solitary mistake and concede the goal. Mario Götze will definitely not be playing on Sunday. For Bastian Schweinsteiger, we’ll have to wait and see. The chances are slim though.

Mats Hummels: "We know now that things could still get pretty tense. We hope to dominate right from the start on Sunday and qualify without any problems. I was partially at fault for the goal. I wasn’t the only one, but I reacted to the danger too slowly.

Thomas Müller: "It was clear from the beginning what would happen here today. We would keep creating chances – not clear-cut chances – but decent chances, keep squandering them and then eventually be punished. I obviously should be burying that chance at the end as well. We didn’t actually play badly at all. However, not taking our chances, and falling asleep once at the back turned out to be decisive."

Jerome Boateng: "We have to score at least one. The fact that we’ve come away from here without scoring is a joke"

Manuel Neuer: "I don’t think we had a bad game. We didn’t create any clear-cut chances but we had at least five good opportunities and should be scoring at least one. We’ve saved all the goals for Georgia, albeit unintentionally"

Ilkay Gündogan: "The final ball was not there today. Ireland defended against it brilliantly. It’s disappointing, but we still have the chance to make it better and qualify"
