Löw: "Too careless with our chances"

In their 19th meeting with Poland, World Champions Germany suffered their first ever defeat. The national team, led by manager Joachim Löw, were beaten 2-0 in their EURO 2016 qualifier on Saturday, despite having several goalscoring opportunities. DFB.de collected the thoughts from the German camp after the game in Warsaw.

Manager Joachim Löw: “Obviously, we’re disappointed. To be honest, I can’t blame my team for much, maybe only that we were too careless with our chances. The way we played was fine; we created a lot of opportunities to score. Poland then made it 1-0 with their very first shot. We now have to look ahead to Tuesday’s game against Ireland, recharge the batteries and show a good response.”

Captain Manuel Neuer: “It was an avoidable defeat. We didn’t play badly. If we had scored the first goal, then we would have won. I came out bravely for the first goal, but I was too late – it was a mistake by me.”

Karim Bellarabi: “Our intentions were to come away with three points. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that. Now we have to win against Ireland on Tuesday. I’m happy with my debut and had chances to score – but I could or maybe should have put one away.”

Mats Hummels: “We were the better team by far. The defeat is a joke to be honest. We have to blame ourselves for not scoring a goal. If we fail to do so, then a game like that can shift. Efficiency is what’s decisive in football.”
