Löw: “Ter Stegen is likely to start”

Joachim Löw showed that he is feeling good ahead of the World Cup qualifier in Nürnberg against San Marino on Saturday. The Germany head coach and Sebastian Rudy were at the press conference to answer journalists’ questions. With 15 international appearances to his name, the future Bayern man has made the third-highest number of appearances in the squad alongside Shkodran Mustafi. The 27-year-old also shared his thoughts on the opposition, his impressions in training and his excitement ahead of the Confed Cup. DFB.de brings you the most important things you need to know from everything Löw and Rudy had to say.

Joachim Löw on…

… the starting XI against San Marino:Marc-Andre ter Stegen is likely to start. I’ll discuss some ideas again today with Andreas Köpke. Sandro Wagner will also start. Julian Draxler completed a small training session without any problems and he is expected to train with the rest of the team later today. If he is also able to do that without any problems, then he will also be in the starting XI and the captain. If some problems do arise though, then we will not be taking any risks. Shkodran Mustafi is available. We left him out on Tuesday as a precaution following his concussion. If Draxler does not play, he will be the captain.

… Preparations for the match against San Marino: We will not be preparing the team as intensely for the match against San Marino. My focus will be on how we shape this game. All respect to San Marino but it is about how we control the game, not how they play. We will be working on our runs doing different things going forward. We want to push San Marino back, play offensively and score goals. But next week, we will have to concentrate on different things since we will be playing at a completely different level at the Confed Cup.

The excitement ahead of the Confed Cup: I’m looking forward to it. The tournament provides a welcome change. But the idea behind it for me is not the results. We want to help the players to get to that next level, which international football demands of you. This Confed Cup will probably end up being important for a few of these guys in a couple of years. I’ll be pleased if two, three or four players can develop in the way I would like them to, regardless of the results. We don’t just want to take each game as it comes. The Confed Cup will allow us and the younger players to benefit in one, two years.

… the team spirit: We’ve been able to sense from the first few days that the atmosphere in the team is very positive. The players bring desire and excitement with them and you can see they are all relishing the Confed Cup. They give you the feeling that they are generally looking forward to the Confed Cup and playing for the national team.

Sebastian Rudy on…

… the World Cup qualifier against San Marino: San Marino will be very defensive, so we need to try to move the ball quickly and get behind their back line to create chances and goals.

… the excitement for the Confed Cup: I’m looking forward to Russia. We want to bring euphoria and fun and to try to bring the people with us. We can do that by having a good tournament. We are not going there to lose. We have a good team and want to show what we can do and of course be right up there with the best.

… the team spirit: You can see that we are growing together each day. Everyone laughs a lot at dinner and the bond is there. That second-nature thinking is improving on the pitch. We can only do well at the Confed Cup if we perform as a team.

… his own expectations: We played well against Denmark. I want to personally bring more to the game, organise and see that we are able to create chances going forward. I’ve been involved with the team for a good two years now but unfortunately I was not able to play at the tournament last summer. However I have never let my head go down and showed this season what I can do.

… the group of Hoffenheim players in the team: We’ve had a fantastic season at Hoffenheim and we want to bring that confidence that we have gained to the team here.
