Löw: "Put up a fight with a healthy dose of physicality"

There was to be no second win in Germany’s second FIFA Confederations Cup group game, but a fine show of resistance from Die Mannschaft ensured they came away from their clash with Chile with a 1-1 draw. We heard from Joachim Löw, Julian Draxler & Co. about what they considered a strong display against a robust Chile side in Kazan.

JOACHIM LÖW: It was a high-quality game, particularly from a tactical point of view. We did our job well defensively. I ask for the boys to take some risks in the way they built up the play, but the opening goal was obviously avoidable. Chile didn’t have all that many chances across the whole game though. The team showed some great resistance and put up a solid fight with a healthy dose of physicality.

We spent a long time analysing Chile. They have an incredible team with very strong individual players. The lads did very well against them and continued to courageously push forward. Getting a result against a side like Chile is by no means a given.

I put Lars Stindl up front with good reason. We needed a player who can lay the ball off very well, and that’s exactly what he did.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that players who haven’t yet featured here in Russia could play against Cameroon. Some fresh legs will no doubt do us some good on Sunday, especially given that Cameroon will deliver a strong physical battle.

JULIAN DRAXLER: Chile showed their quality right from the off. You could sense our nerves in the early stages. But we quickly shaped up and gave them a real game.

LARS STINDL: Our goal came from exactly the kind of attack we were looking to make happen. We moved the ball around well and produced some nice, quick link-up play. It was a deserved equaliser I feel. We knew that Chile would apply a lot of pressure and go for a powerful approach. We set up well for that and managed to play our own game against a strong side. It’s a decent result for us.

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI: We were courageous in our forward play and I think we could have gotten even more out of the game if we had been a little more incisive. We wanted to take a risky approach, but unfortunately my misplaced pass led to their goal and I have to take responsibility for that.
