Löw names 27-man squad for South Tyrol training camp

Following Germany’s match against Poland in Hamburg on Tuesday evening, the German Football Association (DFB) submitted its 30-man provisional squad list for the World Cup in Brazil to FIFA, world football’s governing body. One change has been made to the original group of players, with Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Christoph Kramer replacing Augsburg’s André Hahn.

“It has nothing to do with the way André Hahn performed,” said national team coach Joachim Löw. “We were very happy with the way he played. The decision was made purely on a positional basis. In central midfield we have several players who have been carrying knocks or who have had long spells on the sidelines. That is why we want to take another option to the training camp in order to be prepared for every scenario. Christoph Kramer has been outstanding in training and was excellent in the game.”

Goretzka, Jansen and Meyer on call

Of the 30 players in the provisional World Cup squad, 27 will travel to the training camp in South Tyrol, with Leon Goretzka and Max Meyer placed on standby from the group that faced Poland. “Overall I was very happy with the way such a young team played,” said Löw. “There are many positives we can take from the game. Players like Goretzka and Meyer are ones for the future. They’re still young and will have plenty of chances to play in big tournaments.”

The third player on standby is Hamburg’s Marcell Jansen. “Marcell has recovered from the injury he picked up in the match against Chile in March but he’s still not back to full fitness,” explained Löw. “He hasn’t played much since then and still hasn’t found his rhythm again. We know exactly what Marcell’s capable of doing when he’s fit and I know that I can completely rely on him should any issues arise in his position.”

The national team’s World Cup preparations will begin on 21 May at a training camp in South Tyrol, with a warm-up match against Cameroon in Mönchengladbach on 1 June marking the conclusion of the camp. The DFB has until midnight CET on 2 June to hand in its final 23-man World Cup squad to FIFA. That group of players will play a charity match against Armenia on 6 June in Mainz before departing for the tournament in Brazil from Frankfurt the next day.
