Löw: “Good feeling going into the Confed Cup”

Following the 7-0 thrashing over San Marino, Germany head coach Joachim Löw shares his thoughts with DFB.de about his side’s preparations for the Confederations Cup, their expectations for the tournament and adding the final touches in the next few days.

Interviewer: Joachim Löw, how satisfied are you with the 7-0 win over San Marino as your team now turn to the Confed Cup?

Joachim Löw: We did well what we had intended to, playing with a high tempo, putting the opposition under pressure with our work off the ball and our quick passing. The team were excellent at that. We’ve been able to work on a few things and that has given us some security. It has also done a lot for our confidence. That was our aim, so I am very, very pleased.

Interviewer: How are you feeling as you fly to the Confed Cup on Thursday?

Löw: I’m going there with a very good feeling and excitement about this tournament. It is difficult to say how we will do because the team has had three or four sessions and one week for a newly put-together team is not a lot of time. You can sense the ambition from the young players and that they want to do the best they can. But we will come up against other teams at the Confed Cup that are top-class in their continents and were very successful, such as Portugal and Chile. That is the calibre we are up against.

Interviewer: How pleased were you with Sandro Wagner on his hat-trick?

Löw: Sandro Wagner really put himself about up front with the long balls and was very physical. His commitment and movement was very dangerous, as was he himself from crosses. He scored three goals. We are delighted with that and so is he. Sandro has taken a big step forward this week.

Interviewer: Will he now be the number one striker in the tournament?

Löw: I don’t want to commit to that. There may be the odd match where we have to play on the counterattack and we would need some very quick strikers who always look to make very deep runs. But Sandro has gone about his business in both games very well right from the start.

Interviewer: How did you experience the atmosphere in the stadium?

Löw: The atmosphere overall was very class. You could see that you can still give the fans something to cheer about even against San Marino when you play at your best. But I am still asking myself, why were people booing Timo Werner? He did do one dive and he made a mistake but he admitted to that. Remember, he is a very young player, an international who is only at the start of his career and has scored 21 goals in the Bundesliga. People should not be booing that.

Interviewer: What will you and the team be focussing on before the start of the Confed Cup against Australia on 19th June?

Löw: We will continue to work on our attacking play. That will be our main focus. At the same time we need to make sure that we are consistent at the back and well-organised. We also need to beware at set-pieces.
